What are warts?
These growths are generally unified by their highly contagious nature. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and most commonly affect pediatric patients and young adults.
Do all warts need to be treated?
No. However, it is essential to minimize potential exposure to and prevent outbreaks associated with the more than 60 types of papillomaviruses implicated in the development and spread of warts. What are the different types of warts?
“Common” warts are generally flesh-colored, white, pink, and tan bumps. They may be rough in texture and sprinkled with dark dots or blood vessels. These warts may also resemble certain types of skin cancers. Flat warts are smaller and smoother. They can, however, grow in a big mass or dozens at a time. These warts, too, can resemble skin cancers and acne. Filiform warts grow rapidly and are distinguished by long, finger-like projections that may itch and bleed.
How do you treat warts?
If Dr. Johnson and her team confirm that we need to treat a wart and not skin cancer, acne, or another condition, she may recommend cryotherapy or cryosurgery. This process refers to “freezing off” the wart. A freezing agent such as liquid nitrogen is applied in a targeted fashion to the wart. Intense cooling is in contact with the area for just a few seconds to remove the wart. Additional therapies might include resurfacing the wart with a chemical peel to remove it in layers. If the warts do not respond to treatment or you are vulnerable to future growths, the ShadeTree Dermatology team may also advise on immune-boosting medications to help your body better defend against the viruses associated with warts.
