- Physical examination. The next step in the process involves a physical examination of your skin. - Visual inspection with a dermatoscope. A dermatoscope is best described as a handheld device that allows the dermatologist to see deeper layers of the skin, including the pigment and blood vessel patterns, which may not be visible to the naked eye. This can help them identify any irregularities or abnormalities requiring further investigation, and allows cancer to be caught at its earliest stage while avoiding unnecessary biopsies.
- Biopsy. If the dermatology provider finds any suspicious moles or lesions during the physical examination, they may recommend a biopsy. A small tissue sample is taken from the affected area and sent to a lab for analysis. The results of the biopsy determine if further treatment is necessary.
