Giving the green light to get out of the red! FAQs about treating the redness of rosacea
While there is still much to learn about rosacea, Our providers at ShadeTree Dermatology of Rockledge and Cocoa Beach, Florida, are equipped to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of this common condition right now.
What is rosacea?
This inflammatory skin condition is characterized by several primary and highly visible symptoms. These symptoms include frequent flushing and bumps or pus-filled pimples that look like acne. Visible blood vessels tend to develop on the nose and cheeks. These visible, dilated, or broken capillaries also indicate sun damage. However, research shows that sun damage is different from rosacea. Sun damage is associated with a unique condition known as telangiectatic photoaging (TP).
How does rosacea look different from sun damage and other conditions?
Additional symptoms that frequently distinguish rosacea from acne and other skin conditions with similar features include watery and bloodshot eyes, burning or stinging skin, and a leathery and dry texture. If the disease is not managed correctly, it can progress, and symptoms may worsen, or there may be more frequent occurrences or “flare-ups.” Skin can become swollen, and excess tissue may accumulate, especially around the nasal region, which contributes to a characteristic bulbous nose.
Why might I have rosacea?
The sun is the most common trigger for rosacea flare-ups. When excess blood rushes to the skin’s surface, it manifests as redness, visible blood vessels, and pimple-like bumps, characteristic of rosacea.
What are some other common triggers?
Changes in temperatures and extreme heat or intense cold may aggravate rosacea. It is also best to avoid spicy or hot foods and drinks. It is essential to keep stress in check. Hormonal fluctuations and medications to treat hypertension may also be to blame for your flare-ups.
What treatments do you offer at ShadeTree Dermatology?
While the sun plays a part in redness and blood vessels, either as a primary cause or secondary to rosacea, light-based therapies may improve the appearance of your skin. When carefully controlled and planned by Dr. Johnson and her team, light energy may be applied and generated to target the underlying source of many skin diseases, including psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea. Several medications are also available to ease the bumps, swelling, and redness of rosacea and to reduce the frequency of flare-ups.
Of course, our passion for partnering with patients also shines when it comes to preventing rosacea flares. We can help you to identify your unique triggers and then work with you to avoid or minimize those skin stressors.
