Say Goodbye to Persistent Rashes: Your Expert Guide to Relief and Treatment
What’s that rash? Is it serious? At ShadeTree Dermatology, serving Brevard county, Florida, and the surrounding area, we take your concerning rashes very seriously. We also take the time and provide the attention you deserve to get to the bottom of what may be causing your worrisome patches, persistent itch, irritation, and other symptoms that interfere with your day-to-day life. Only then can we provide real relief with appropriate treatment.
What is a rash, exactly?
Rashes are all generally unified by areas of irritation and swollen skin. Dermatitis refers to rashes and quite literally is derived from the words for “skin” and “inflammation. There are also several sub-types of dermatitis that can be responsible for your itch and distress. These different forms also take on varied characteristics and are not the only sources of irritation/rash treated by our talented medical team at ShadeTree Dermatology.
What are the most common types of dermatitis?
The ShadeTree team frequently and successfully treats and manages eczema (atopic dermatitis), contact dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis tends to be very itchy, red, swollen, and associated with cracking/fissures and crusting. Contact dermatitis may be triggered by allergens (like nickel) and irritants (like detergents). It may manifest as areas of discoloration, swelling, oozing sores, and flaky and scaly skin. You may also experience burning or stinging sensations.
Seborrheic dermatitis is better known as dandruff or “cradle cap” among our youngest pediatric patients. It is most commonly associated with a very itchy scalp and noticeable white flakes in adults. In children, cradle cap often produces crusty, scaly yellow sores on the scalp that do not itch.
What are some other potential causes of my rash?
Other common types of rashes include urticaria, hives, and psoriasis. The former is characterized by intensely itchy, raised, and red welts, while the latter is an autoimmune skin condition that produces characteristic thick, scaly patches. Additionally, viral and bacterial sources of rashes require prompt treatment. These include chickenpox, measles, and strep throat. So, a rash can also provide insights into what may be going on internally with your health and your “system” in general.
How can you make my rash go away?
Well, our approaches are as varied as the rash itself! Depending on the cause of the rash and any associated triggers, your provider with ShadeTree Dermatology may prescribe medications, creams, steroids, and other topicals to ease itching, inflammation, and the immune response to allergens. Practicing avoidance measures of known allergens, irritants, and other triggers also helps to prevent the rash from occurring in the first place. As true partners with our patients from across Brevard County, we can also advise on skincare products and routines to keep the skin that you are in clear and comfortable.
