If you have recently been diagnosed with plaque psoriasis, you might have many questions for your skincare provider. At ShadeTree Dermatology, Dr. Vanessa Johnson and her team are committed to providing the best possible care for those challenged by certain skin disorders and conditions. Below are just a few frequently asked questions about plaque psoriasis.
Our team best describes plaque psoriasis as a chronic skin condition that causes raised, red, scaly patches to form on the skin, usually on areas like your elbows, knees, or scalp. These patches are caused by your skin cells growing too fast, creating a build-up that turns into trademark plaques.
Plaque psoriasis is not contagious. You cannot catch it from someone else, and cannot pass it along like a cold. It is an autoimmune condition, meaning your immune system tricks your body. It is not a viral condition that can be spread between people.
While we cannot always pinpoint the specific cause, it is often a mix of genetic and environmental factors. If you have family members with psoriasis, your chances of having it might be higher. Stress, certain foods, or infections can also trigger flare-ups.
While there is not yet a permanent cure for plaque psoriasis, the good news is that many treatments are available to manage symptoms and keep your skin clear or under control. Options match your needs, from creams to light therapy to medications.
There are a few ways to protect your skin and body from regular flare-ups. Moisturize daily, manage stress, stay healthy, and avoid known triggers like smoking or harsh skincare products. A little self-care goes a long way to keep flare-ups at bay!
Unfortunately, it can itch, and sometimes it might even sting. The best thing you can do is resist the urge to scratch, keep your skin hydrated, and treat it according to the treatment plan your provider at ShadeTree Dermatology recommends. This may include topical prescription medications to soothe the area and keep itching and stinging to a minimum.
