Next-generation lasers are here today! FAQs about Fraxel®, big results without the risk
Lasers have transformed how specialists like our own Dr. Vanessa Johnson resurface the skin and bring fresh, healthy, undamaged cells to the surface. Laser technologies are getting better all the time. Here at ShadeTree Dermatology, we are proud to serve the Cocoa Beach—Rockledge, Florida, areas with an advanced suite of laser systems, including Fraxel®.
What is Fraxel®?
Fraxel laser treatment targets aging and sun damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into your skin to expedite your body’s remodeling of collagen. This technology also triggers a healing process deep within the skin to essentially resurface from the inside out – and without the removal of the outermost tissues.
How is it different from “traditional” lasers?
Earlier-generation laser-assisted resurfacing involves removing the skin, starting with the outermost layer of the epidermis and working downward. These technologies do so with pulses of concentrated light in specific wavelengths. While such treatment is time-tested and effective at softening everything from wrinkles to correcting lackluster tone and texture, these lasers may be accompanied by considerable downtime and recovery.
Can it treat almost any condition?
Due to its unique engineering, many patients are appropriate candidates for Fraxel®. By deeply penetrating targeted layers of the skin, it is appropriate for resurfacing large discolored patches of melasma (and other pigment issues), sun damage, AKs (pre-cancerous actinic keratosis), scarring from acne and previous trauma, big pores, and wrinkles. Even delicate areas, such as under the eyes, may be safely and predictably treated with Fraxel®.
What can I expect during treatment?
If we determine that Fraxel® is right for you, the actual treatment portion of the process can be completed quickly, in around 20 to 25 minutes for the full face. A topical numbing cream is applied to cleansed skin for utmost comfort. After the site is fully numbed, we pass the laser over the areas of concern. Several passes are made, and you may feel a fleeting sensation of warmth as the energy from the laser is delivered to precise parts of the skin. This advanced system also features built-in cooling for added safety and to prevent discomfort associated with heat and the generated thermal reaction.
What will my skin look like afterward?
Your skin may look mildly sunburnt immediately following treatment. The treatment site may also be swollen or puffy the following day, but this often goes away on its own in a couple of days. It’s also not unusual to temporarily experience a change of texture as the damaged skin cells work their way up the surface. Any heavily pigmented areas are bronze and are typically sloughed off three to four days post-treatment. In all, it takes about five to seven days to recover from facial treatment. We can advise on makeup and other products to use to help with healing and to provide coverage in the days following your procedure.
When can I expect to see full results? And how long do they last?
Since Fraxel® is responsible for a healing process, the overall condition of the skin continues to improve for several months. As always, it is essential to apply a broad-spectrum UVA-UVB and high-SPF sunscreen each day. While we can’t stop the clock, results from Fraxel® are durable as long as you take good care of your skin. Other factors contributing to the sustained results from treatment include your “starting point,” the skin condition, and your age. Many of our patients at ShadeTree Dermatology appreciate how much softer their skin feels and how much brighter it looks soon after treatment, and all of this is achieved without prolonged downtime and demands on your body for healing.
Fraxel® is bridging the gap between superficial treatments and aggressive procedures with extended downtime. You can get big results without the risk! Call (321) 200-0346 to schedule your consultation at our offices in Cocoa Beach or Rockledge, FL today.
