ShadeTree Dermatology knows that pimples can be painful, both physically and emotionally. These common bumps tend to arise in hard-to-miss areas such as the face. They can even leave lasting reminders long after your last breakout in the form of raised or depressed scars and areas that are either lighter or darker than the rest of the skin (hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation, respectively). Nothing brings our Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Vanessa Johnson, and our teams in Cocoa Beach and Rockledge, Florida, greater joy than to make these spots, such a source of distress and embarrassment, disappear. Treatment options include in-office laser or light-based therapy.
Lasers and other light-based devices generally involve directing light of specific wavelengths toward the areas of concern. Lasers present a precise way to target acne; specifically, they kill the bacteria responsible for acne. They also help ease associated inflammation and reduce the oil produced by the sebaceous glands. Acne is caused by inflammation, excess oil or sebum production, bacteria, and hair follicles clogged with oil and dead skin cells.
Specific experiences vary from patient to patient and are also based on the laser system used. Generally, all light-based procedures start with us providing you with protective eyewear. We will also cleanse your face and remove excess oil from the treatment areas. You then relax as Dr. Johnson directs the light or laser treatment toward the affected areas of your face, chest, back, shoulders, and elsewhere that must be treated. Depending on your needs, gliding the laser over certain areas more than once may be necessary to ensure the best results. Many in-office treatments can make your skin more photosensitive, so we want to apply a good broad-spectrum sunscreen immediately after your treatment.
Acne comes in many different forms. Some types of acne may be more “responsive” to laser treatment than others. Many acne treatment plans, in general, are also multi-faceted. For instance, no procedure is a substitute for good skincare. You can get and maintain your best results by following the skincare guidance of Dr. Johnson and our team at ShadeTree Dermatology, which is tailored to your needs.
Yes! Lasers are particularly effective and appropriate for treating depressed scars. The energy from the laser generates heat, which helps to trigger the production of collagen. This protein is among the building blocks of our skin, and when stimulated, it encourages new, healthy tissue to fill in the depressions associated with such atrophic scars.
Of course, we strive to prevent these scars and other acne-related complications. To accomplish this, we must proactively clear your skin! Our Cocoa Beach and Rockledge, FL teams will also work with you to keep your skin clear and healthy.
