Putting a stop to the persistent itch and inflammation or eczema with specialty dermatology care
More than 31 million Americans (~10% of the population) are reported to have eczema. Since this inflammation is actually not one but many different types of conditions, it’s important to enlist the vast specialized knowledge and expertise of our providers at ShadeTree and our teams in Rockledge and Cocoa Beach, Florida. As a medical dermatologist, Dr. Johnson provides tailored, safe, and predictable eczema treatment to adults and children.
What is eczema?
As noted, eczema comes in many forms. Atopic dermatitis may be accompanied by severely itchy, red, inflamed, peeling, and flaky skin. Contact dermatitis is associated with irritants and allergens that, true to its name, come in contact with the skin. This contact results in blistering, cracking, burning, and stinging. Still other forms of eczema include seborrheic dermatitis (“cradle cap” in infants) and nummular eczema (defined by characteristic disc-shaped irritation that resembles ringworm).
Why do I have eczema?
Eczema’s causes are not fully understood. The inflammation of eczema is linked to an immune response. Specific allergens or triggers can give rise to the condition or make it worse. The idea behind managing this condition is first to identify the trigger and then modify your behaviors to avoid it or minimize your risk of an adverse reaction or “flare-up.”
What are some common “triggers”?
Again, what triggers your eczema may differ from the triggers responsible for a family member’s rashes and other symptoms. However, common allergens and irritants include harsh soaps and skincare products, synthetic fibers, pet dander, and dust mites. Poorly managed stress, certain foods, and exposure to dramatic fluctuations in temperatures can also make your eczema worse.
How do you treat eczema?
After we have isolated your triggers, we will work with you to manage them. If symptoms continue to interfere with your day-to-day life, prescription creams, and other medications may be in your future. Those medications may even be combined with in-office therapies.
What are some good therapies at ShadeTree Dermatology?
As a specialty practice, we can access many advanced options to bring out your clear, healthy skin. These include laser and light-based treatments. The energy generated by the laser beam targets the source of inflammation to improve the feel and look of itchy, red, flaky, and otherwise damaged skin. Plus, by effectively treating this condition, many complications are avoided – including damage and infections caused by excessive scratching of intensely itchy skin.
